# What Is AI Search Optimization (AEO/GEO)?

## Key facts

| Fact | Value |
|---|---|
| Google's position | No extra requirements, no AI text files, no special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode (Search Central, last updated 10 Dec 2025) |
| FAQ rich results | No longer shown in Google Search since 7 May 2026; FAQ markup can stay but earns no special display |
| Bing AI Performance | Public preview since 10 Feb 2026: counts citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries, not placement |
| Citation vs ranking | About 12% of AI-cited URLs ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt; Perplexity 28.6% (Ahrefs, Aug 2025) |
| Schema test | Adding schema to 1,885 pages produced no major citation uplift on any platform (Ahrefs, May 2026) |

**AI search optimization, also called AEO or GEO, is the work of making your website easy for AI answer tools such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot to find, understand and cite accurately. As of 15 October 2026, Google says it needs no special files, schema or extra steps: it is ordinary SEO done well, plus measuring what those tools say about you. Most small businesses need the fundamentals and the measurement, not a separate "AI SEO" package.**

## What do SEO, AEO and GEO actually mean?

**SEO (search engine optimization)** is making a site easy for a search engine to crawl, index and rank: technical health, relevant content, and links pointing to it.

**AEO (answer engine optimization)** is structuring content so a system looking for a direct answer, such as a featured snippet, a voice assistant or an AI Overview, can lift an accurate answer out of it. It predates ChatGPT.

**GEO (generative engine optimization)** is the newer term for the same goal applied to generative assistants, which synthesise an answer from several sources and sometimes cite them.

The three overlap so heavily that we treat them as one connected piece of work. They describe different readers of the same page, not three technical stacks. A page that answers a real question clearly, with evidence, tends to serve all three.

This guide is the definition and the decision. For the hands-on steps, read [how to help your website appear in ChatGPT search](/blog/get-cited-in-chatgpt). For tracking results, read [how to measure AI search visibility](/blog/measure-ai-search-visibility).

## What changed in 2026?

Three dated facts reset the conversation this year.

**Google: no special optimization.** Google's Search Central page [AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) (last updated 10 December 2025, read 15 October 2026) says: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." It adds: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features," and "There's also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add." It does ask that [structured data](/glossary#structured-data) match the visible text, and it reports AI feature traffic inside the Search Console Performance report, under the "Web" search type.

**Google: FAQ rich results ended on 7 May 2026.** Google's [FAQ structured data documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/faqpage) now states the feature no longer appears in Google Search, and [Search Engine Journal reported](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-drops-faq-rich-results/574429/) that FAQ markup "can stay in place" but no longer produces a visible result. Any pitch still selling FAQ schema as a search win is out of date.

**Bing: a citation report.** On 10 February 2026 Microsoft launched [AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools](https://blogs.bing.com/webmaster/2026/2/Introducing-AI-Performance-in-Bing-Webmaster-Tools-Public-Preview/) as a public preview. It shows total citations, cited pages and sample "grounding queries" across Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and some partner integrations. Microsoft says the cited-pages figure "does not indicate ranking, authority, or the role of any page within an individual answer." It is the first first-party citation count a small business can see for free.

## What actually differs from classic SEO?

None of these are Google requirements. They are patterns in published research, worth knowing when you decide where to spend.

| Finding | Source | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| About 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt; Perplexity was higher at 28.6% | [Ahrefs, 15,000 prompts, Aug 2025](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-search-overlap/) | Ranking and being cited are related but separate outcomes, so measure both |
| Cited URLs were on average 25.7% fresher than organic results; Google's AI Overviews were the exception | [Ahrefs, 17 million citations, Jul 2025](https://ahrefs.com/blog/do-ai-assistants-prefer-to-cite-fresh-content/) | Keep a true "last updated" date and change it only when the page changes |
| Adding schema to 1,885 pages "produced no major uplift in citations on any platform" | [Ahrefs, May 2026](https://ahrefs.com/blog/schema-ai-citations/) | Schema describes you; it does not buy a citation |
| Reddit (3.11%), YouTube (2.13%) and Wikipedia (1.35%) were the most-cited domains across 4 billion+ citations | [Profound, Nov 2025](https://www.tryprofound.com/blog/the-data-on-reddit-and-ai-search) | Some of what assistants say about you comes from places other than your own site |

Two recommendations follow from those, in our view rather than as anyone's published rule. First, keep your business name, address, phone number and service description the same everywhere you control them, so a system can resolve "your business" to one thing. Second, most AI answers cite several sources, so aim to be one accurate source among them, not "the answer".

## Do you need AI search optimization?

Use this as a decision table. It is our editorial judgement, not a guarantee of any result.

| Your situation | What we would do |
|---|---|
| Your SEO basics are weak: pages not indexed, unclear service pages, no Google Business Profile | Fix the basics first. That is also what Google says helps AI features |
| Basics are sound, and customers research you by asking questions | Add answer-first service pages and start measuring AI citations and referrals |
| A vendor is selling AI text files, "AI schema" or FAQ markup as the main deliverable | Ask for their method and a dated baseline first; Google says neither file nor schema is needed, and [measuring AI search visibility](/blog/measure-ai-search-visibility) shows what a real baseline records |
| You're asking whether to add llms.txt | Read [do I need an llms.txt file?](/blog/do-i-need-llms-txt); it is optional, not a ranking fix |

For a law firm, clinic, accountancy or trades business in Kitchener-Waterloo or anywhere in Ontario, the honest value is narrower than the marketing around GEO suggests, and still real. Someone asking an assistant who handles a problem in their city is early in a decision. Being an accurate, citable source puts you in front of them. It does not replace local SEO, and no one can promise when, or whether, a given assistant will cite you.

## Where do AI referrals show up?

Google counts [AI Overviews and AI Mode](/glossary#ai-overviews) traffic inside the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report; it is not split out. Visits from assistants that link to you appear in your analytics as referral traffic from their domains, such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. Bing's AI Performance report shows citations, not clicks. Each of these is a partial view, which is why we keep a dated log alongside them. The [measurement guide](/blog/measure-ai-search-visibility) compares what each tool shows and what none of them do.

## FAQ

### Is AEO different from SEO?

It is an extension of SEO, not a replacement. The technical basics, a crawlable, indexable site with useful and original content, are unchanged. What gets more attention is answer-first writing, consistent business facts across the web, and measuring what assistants say about you. Anyone telling you AEO replaces SEO is selling something.

### Do I need special AI markup?

No. Google's page on AI features says there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add, and no new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup. Ordinary structured data still helps describe who you are and what you offer, as long as it matches the visible page.

### Is FAQ schema still worth adding?

Not for a Google search feature. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026 and says FAQ structured data can stay in place without causing problems. Write the FAQ for readers; do not expect the markup to change how the result looks.

### Will AI search kill my traffic?

Nobody can tell you that for your site in advance. Measure it instead: Google counts AI feature traffic inside its Web performance report, Bing reports citations in Copilot, and your analytics shows referral visits from assistants. Our guide to measuring AI search visibility covers the method.
