# Russet Early Learning (Concept) — Will my toddler actually get a space?

**Concept.** Concept — no client, nothing shipped, no metrics.

> No client commissioned it and no business has been measured against it. Any figure on this page is a projection, and its assumptions are printed with it.

Russet is a child-care centre we invented, in an old limestone schoolhouse in Guelph. We designed the site a parent needs before they phone: the waitlist as it stands this week, the fee they would really pay, today's lunch, and a tour.

## Facts

| Fact | Value |
|---|---|
| Our role | Self-initiated study |
| Scope | Check the waitlist for my child's age group, see what the fee really is under CWELCC, and book a tour |
| Constraints | Parents do not choose a centre on its mission statement; they choose on whether there will be a space, what it will cost, and what their child will do all day. |

## The question

*Will my toddler actually get a space?*

Parents do not choose a centre on its mission statement; they choose on whether there will be a space, what it will cost, and what their child will do all day.

Most centres already know all three answers each week and keep them behind a phone call, which is the one thing a working parent cannot make between 9 and 5.

So the site publishes the waitlist by age group every Monday, explains CWELCC in one sentence with the real daily fee, prints today's menu, and books a tour, and it never shows a child's face to do any of it.

## Decisions

Three decisions, each as a strike, an insertion and a numbered reason.

- The waitlist is a number, by age group, every Monday.
- Today's menu, not a promise about meals.
- CWELCC in one sentence, with the fee you pay.

## What we did not do

- Photographs of children, even with signed consent forms.
- A mission statement above the fold.
- A waitlist deposit (Ontario does not allow one anyway).
- A chatbot to answer fee questions the page can answer in one line.

## Why we made this

Nothing was shipped and nothing was measured.

Child-care sites tend to lead with values and photographs of children, and keep the three facts a parent needs behind a phone call. We wanted to work out, at the fidelity of a real site, what happens when the waitlist, the fee and the menu are the content. It also let us design for a hard rule we would hold a real centre to: no identifiable child anywhere, which pushes the design toward what a parent actually checks at drop-off: the counts, the fee and the menu board, with simple shapes doing the wayfinding a photograph usually does.

## Validation

Nothing has been validated. Nobody has used it.

### The limits

- Russet is invented. Nobody has used this site, and nothing on this page was measured.
- Waitlist numbers, fees and menus are story data; the tour booking is simulated and nothing is sent.
- CWELCC figures are illustrative. A real centre would publish its own rates from its licence agreement.
- The screens are our renders of the prototype.
