Product design, prototypes and pitch decks in Waterloo

Most Waterloo companies we hear from need the same three things, roughly in this order: a product people can follow, a prototype to test it, and a deck that explains it to someone with money.

  1. Kick-offIn person in Waterloo: the user, the one flow that matters, and what you already know.
  2. PrototypeA clickable core flow, put in front of people who match your user, then changed.
  3. Hand-offScreens, states and a component set your developers can build from.
  4. RaiseA deck that tells the same story the product does, with your own dated numbers.

  1. Prototype before you commit a sprint to it

A clickable prototype costs days; a built feature nobody understands costs months. We draw the core flow, put it in front of five people who match your user, and change it before your developers start. That is usually the cheapest product decision a small team will make.

    • One core flow, end to end, before the edges
    • A prototype you can put in front of a user this week
    • States drawn: empty, loading, error and success
    • A component set your developers can build from
  2. A deck that reads without you in the room

Most decks get read on a phone between meetings, forwarded by someone who liked your call. So each slide makes one claim, the numbers are yours and dated, and the story holds together with nobody narrating it. We publish no client decks, which is why the work shown here is our own practice.

  3. Context, not affiliation

Waterloo has an unusual density of early-stage software companies around the University of Waterloo, its Velocity incubator, the Accelerator Centre and Communitech in downtown Kitchener. We have no affiliation with any of them. It simply means the founders here tend to need product, deck and brand work close together, and it helps to have one studio that does all three.

  4. Meeting in Waterloo

We come to your office, co-working desk or a café in Uptown Waterloo for the kick-off and the main reviews. Between them we work in a shared prototype and leave written comments, so the team can review on its own time rather than block an afternoon.

Measured, not claimed

What we measured in Waterloo

The index has no Waterloo rows (the region's chamber directory is off-limits to crawlers under its own robots.txt), and it measured professional practices rather than software companies. What does carry over to a product team is how readable those 187 Ontario sites were to machines, because structured data and llms.txt are what search engines and assistants read before they describe a company.

  • Waterloo sites in the indexNone. No Waterloo site is in the 2026-10b edition.
  • Any schema.org structured data, Ontario-wide80% of 187 homepages.
  • A LocalBusiness-type description35% of 187.
  • An llms.txt file published28% of 187.

Practices, not startups: read these as the state of the web around a Waterloo product, not as a measure of product sites. Nothing here is a claim about a client of ours.

The work, labelled

Work that fits this page, each piece labelled.

A real product engagement, shown anonymised at the client's request, a consumer app drawn end to end, and the deck practice that usually runs alongside them. The law firm with a Waterloo office is a text line, because it is a website, not product work.

  • Study-habit app · product UXClient work, anonymised

A phone on a stone slab showing the Stride home screen, with a focus-streak banner and a Deep Work session card.

    Stride

A study app built around one obvious next session: three onboarding screens, a four-question intake that ends in a plan, study areas that hold a goal as easily as a course, and a component set on an eight-point grid.

Client work, anonymised at the client's request. No install or retention figures claimed.

  • Consumer app · product UXConcept

Tandem, group decision: One more yes. The coastal weekend, 12 to 14 June, $320 to 380 per person; 3 of 4 have accepted, with Maya, Ari and Sam accepted and You marked Your turn.

    Tandem

A group-trip app drawn around agreeing, not searching: each friend's dates and a private budget, a few options compared on the same facts, and a plan that counts as agreed only when everyone says yes.

Tandem — the group decision: a plan counts only when everyone says yes · studio concept

  • Pitch decks · studio practiceOur own practice

Funded: four distinct pitch deck identities for Zonely, Embergrid, Serein and Tandem.

    Funded — pitch deck practice

Four startup concepts, each with its own audience, message and visual identity.

Original studio studies for Zonely, Embergrid, Serein and Tandem. No real fundraising process or business outcome is represented.

Stride is client work, anonymised at the client's request: no install or retention figure is claimed. Tandem is a studio concept: no client, nothing shipped, no results. Funded is our own deck practice; no founder's deck is shown.

Questions

Founder questions: prototypes, decks, NDAs and hand-off.

Not from us. Our index measured Ontario law, clinic and accounting practices, not software companies, and none of them in Waterloo. For a product site the useful takeaway is the machine-readable layer: 80% of the 187 practice homepages carried structured data, and 28% published an llms.txt file.

Usually, yes. A clickable prototype of the core flow can be tested with real users in days, and it turns arguments about the design into observations. Build the production version once the prototype stops surprising people.

Scoped and quoted before we start. Scope moves the price more than anything else: one core flow for a prototype is a different job from a full app with onboarding, settings and payments. The quote states the scope, the price and the date before anything starts.

Quoted against your meeting date. Tell us when you are presenting or sending it, and we plan backwards from that date. The slowest part is almost always gathering your numbers, so have those ready.

Yes. We come to your office, co-working space or a café nearby for the kick-off and the main reviews. Between those we work in a shared prototype with written comments, so your team can review without blocking an afternoon.

Yes. A lot of our startup work is under NDA, which is why the product and deck work on this site is either anonymised at the client's request or our own practice. We publish sector, deliverable and stage only, never a founder's numbers.

Screens for every state the flow can be in, a component set with its spacing and type rules, and notes on behaviour that a static screen cannot show. The aim is that a developer can build it without booking a call to ask what happens next.

If your company has 50 or more employees in Ontario, your public website falls under the Integrated Accessibility Standards and must meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA. Small startups are not bound by that section yet, but designing for keyboard, screen-reader and contrast from the first prototype costs far less than retrofitting it later.
